If you fancy a hen party in Edinburgh and have an artistic flare then the Crafty Hen could be right up your street! Today we caught up with Julie from Crafty Hen where she tells us a bit more about what you can expect from a craft packed hen party!
Tell us exactly what the Crafty Hen is.
The Crafty Hen offers fun craft workshops for hen parties, giving groups the opportunity to make and create, and enjoy time with friends. All the hens come away with an amazing finished item that they can wear with pride, or use at the wedding, and of course, treasure forever!
How did the idea for hen parties come about?
I have always run craft workshops for adults, and more and more people asked me for hen party workshops, and birthday party sessions. In the end the demand was bigger than one woman could cope with, so, The Crafty Hen fledged! Since, it’s grown bigger and bigger and we now cover the whole of the UK. We have a fantastic team of workshop leaders covering the length and breadth of the UK, and have a great selection ready to host your workshops at VieAmhor properties.
What is your role?
My technical title is “Director”; however, I’m involved with anything and everything Crafty Hen related. We are only a small business and because of this it allows us to tailor our sessions exactly to the groups’ requirements and make the sessions personal to you… so I spend a lot of time communicating with clients. I also engage the workshop leaders, sort materials, logistics, training, marketing, run sessions ….I also deal with a lot of bookings as well! To be honest the list is endless!
How do the workshops work?
The workshop leader arrives between 15 and 45mins before your session (depends which session) to set up. During this time, she needs access to the space being used for the session. We usually need a clear table space and a chair for everyone, but this can vary a little session to session. The workshop leader will bring all the materials and equipment needed, so you have nothing to think about at all, you just have to sit back and anticipate it!
Once she’s all set up, she will explain the activity and be on hand throughout to provide expert guidance! All of our workshop leaders are artists and experienced in working with groups, so will have great ideas and tips to share if you need a bit of help. Why not put on some of the Bride-to-be’s favourite tunes and enjoy bottle of bubbly and some cake alongside the session as well. Most of all our sessions are fun! We provide a relaxed atmosphere, and you get a good chance to have a chat and catch up with your nearest and dearest.
Which is your favourite workshop and why?
That’s a hard one, I love them all. So much effort goes into making each session unique and special. However, if I had to choose, I would probably pick ‘Knicker Customisation’ just because it’s a great laugh. You can be sensible or silly in what you create and anyone can do it. We provide ribbons, bows, lace, trimmings, crystals, buttons, fabrics and much more, and show you how to make unique pants. It’s great for people who haven’t done anything like this before, but also those who are particularly crafty. I think this is one of my favourites because no one will ever create the same pair of pants and you can really have fun as you go. What is more, you get a great item to keep and treasure to remind you of the hen do.
What type of hen / group is ‘crafty hen’ most suited to?
Anyone! Crafty or not, we show you how. Essentially most our groups use the making time as a chance to catch up with friends and have a good gossip and make something. All our sessions are designed for anyone, including people who have done absolutely nothing crafty before, to those who have done loads. There are loads of techniques and choices with each session, so everyone can find something that appeals to them. So many people comment after our sessions that they were a little unsure beforehand as they didn’t think they were crafty, but absolutely loved it… and many actually carry on making things.
Our sessions also suit crafty brides who would like to make something for their wedding with all their friends involved. It makes a really special thing for them to keep.
Have you hosted an Edinburgh hen party before?
We certainly have, Knicker customisation is popular here. I think Edinburgh is a distinctive place and it’s great to make some special items here that can be treasured by the entire group. It really helps create a lasting memory of both the hen do, and the place. Ours hens love to explore the creative side of Edinburgh, so I suppose that’s why our sessions go hand in hand with this!
