Kid-Friendly Edinburgh: Tips from Local Mums

Looking for tips on what to do and see with your kids in Edinburgh? Who better to ask than local mums? We got in touch with some of our favourite Edinburgh mummy bloggers for their expert advice.

2561551_73f040f7Local mum Ellie, of BlueBeretMum, tells her tales of parenthood in cleverly written (often hilarious) blog posts, super sweet letters to her son ‘Peanut’ and with haikus guaranteed to make you smile.

Ellie’s local hangouts:

“On a rainy day our 15 month old bundle of trouble loves the National Museum of Scotland where he can touch an asteroid and play instruments from all over the world.  And when the sun comes out we head straight to the Botanical Garden and say hello to ducks and squirrels.  All of these venues are very family friendly and great fun for both the little and slightly bigger people!”

Luxembourg-native turned Edinburgh mum Franca brings her creative flair to parenting and shares all in her blog Oranges and Apples. From some absolutely adorable Father’s Day cupcakes to plenty of amazing vintage outfits, Franca’s cheerful musings showcase the true joys of parenthood.

Franca’s favourite baby-friendly Edinburgh activities:

“I like the playgroup in St. George’s church on York place, the baby massage with Knot Stressed and the baby cinema in the Cameo and Filmhouse.”

417427_6abcfb67Over at Mom, Mum or Ma?, Edinburgh mum Charlene offers her unique perspective as an American mum living in Scotland. Her blog chronicles the adventures of her wee son Freddie, from learning baby sign language to encountering the royal helicopter.

Charlene’s top tips:

“I love taking my son Freddie to the playground in the Meadows. There are so many different areas to play in (the sand is currently his favourite spot!) that we can (and do) spend hours there.”

A former beauty journalist, Edinburgh mum Jess switched gears to all things baby after the arrival of her son ‘ACM’. Now, together with pal Sarah, she blogs on the art of baby whispering over at The Mummy Years, sharing her thoughts on dribble bibs, first birthday parties and finding the ideal work-baby balance.

Jess’ advice for visiting families:

“Whether you’re a local or a visitor, parents cannot resist the call of The Meadows for a stroll (you have 3 play parks to choose from!) and a decent caffeine hit. Our preferred stop is at Peter’s Yard for a cardamon bun and a cuppa…If it looks like it’s about to rain, duck into Doodles – the neighbouring paint your own ceramic workshop. The super-helpful staff will work with your little one to create a handmade masterpiece.”
